Besides the blog home page with blog posts in reverse chronological order, WordPress allows users to create unlimited number of separate pages and to maintain static content on these pages. The blog posts are by default only displayed on the blog home page. However, sometimes it is desired to display blog posts also on pages other than the blog home page. Different pages should contain different blog posts and the blog admin needs be in full control of assigning posts po pages. Here is how to set it up, no programming skills required.

There are multiple ways how to implement posting on different pages in WordPress. The solution described here is based on using WordPress menus where each menu item links to a different blog page and each blog page contains a separate set of blog posts. We will use a record shop blog as an use case.

Prerequisites

WordPress 3.0 or higher (or a blog hosted on WordPress.com)

WordPress theme which supports Menus

Categorized blog posts. Each page will contain blog posts of one category

Solution

Start with creating categories in the WordPress Admin UI. Four our record store use case those categories could be for instance “New arrivals”, “Album reviews” and “Special offers”. The blog administrator will add every new (or existing) blog post to one of the three categories. Each blog post will appear only on a single page of the future blog. Add one more category for the blog home page, for instance “Blog home page”. Our use case blog will in total have four pages.

Note that the names of the categories do not necessarily have to match the future names of the pages. Depending on the template you use, the category names may not even be visible to blog visitors at all.

To allow for a blog with different posts on different pages, create a menu. This menu will replace WordPress default page navigation. Each menu item of the new menu will link to a separate category of blog posts instead of linking to a static page.

Add items to the menu for each category and the blog home page. Four our record store use case, the menu would look something like this:

Menu Item category “Blog home page”, navigation label e.g. “Blog”

Menu Item category “New Arrivals”, navigation label “New Arrivals”

Menu Item category “Album reviews”, navigation label “Album reviews”

Menu Item category “Special offers”, navigation label “Special offers”

Set the menu you just created as “Primary Menu”. Note that navigation label titles do not need to match respective category names. At this point, you have a blog with different posts on different pages.

There is one more problem to resolve: when you arrive to URL of the blog you just modified, you will notice that on the blog home page there are all blog posts visible, regardless the category. This is a default behavior of WordPress and as designed. (When you subsequently click on “Blog” menu item, you will only see the blog posts in “Blog home page” category which is what we wanted to achieve, but is not the landing page of the blog, note the
category/blog/
in the URL).

We therefore need to restring the blog posts only to category “Blog home page” on the landing page of the blog before the blog visitor selects any of the categories from the menu. There are a few plugins which can help us achieving that. Install and activate for instance RYO Category Visibility plugin. In the plugin admin page, uncheck “Front” for every category other than “Blog main page”.

You now have a fully functional blog with different posts on different pages. I used the above solution for the blog you are reading now, too. See the “Blog” and “Page 2″ menu items. To fine tune and polish some details I also modified the theme code slightly. Let me know whether this solution worked for you.

Chrome’s Omnibar offers a simple integration with Google search engine. Just type the search phrase to the Omnibar and select “Google search” in the drop-down menu to see the search hit-list in Google. A problem with this feature occurs when you are living outside the US yet you still prefer to see the results returned by google.com as opposed to results returned by your country local Google site.

Chrome is set up in such way that once you are abroad, you might get the search results returned by the Google site of the country determined on the IP address of your computer. So for instance for me this means that when I use Omnibar as a search UI, I always get my search results returned by google.nl as I live in the Netherlands. This happens despite the fact that I have a cookie set to always use google.com in English. A rather annoying small feature as google.nl returns different (localized) results than google.com.

An obvious first step to resolve the problem is to look at the list of search engines and to change the entry for Google from google.nl to google.com:

1) Right-click on Omnibar
2) Select Edit Search Engines…
3) Select Google google.nl*
4) Modify google.nl* to google.com

*) Depending on country where you live, you will see a different hostname here

Unfortunately, you will notice that this did not help. Chrome does not update the actual search URL with the updated keyword. Instead, Chrome will always use the name of the local Google search engine in the URL – note the
{google:baseURL}
macro.

The only way how to force Chrome to always use google.com for search is to Add a new search engine entry and set it as new default. You can use for instance the following values:

Name: Google search
Keyword: google.com
URL: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%s

Tested with

Google Chrome 8.0.552.231 on Mac OS X 10.6.4

Google Chrome 8.0.552.224 on Windows XP SP2

Every year since I remember, with exception of the year when I served in the army, I celebrated Christmas the same way – with my mother and brother, in Prešov, the Eastern Slovakian town where I was born and where my family lives. This small tradition of celebrating Christmas together became especially precious ever since I moved and settled down in the Netherlands a decade ago. Those moments of being together as a family are very precious to me. This year’s holiday season was supposed to be no different. Just a few hours before the departure of our flight eastwards however everything changed.

My girlfriend Jessika suddenly fell ill and within three hours from appearance of the first symptoms ended up with high fever in bed, on antibiotics. And since we are half way through our first pregnancy, we did not want to risk anything and stayed at home in Amsterdam. Unplanned, unexpected. No food in the fridge, sad family on the phone, sick girlfriend to be taken care of and the Christmas day around the corner. What a nightmare.

The situation did not provide for much time to contemplate. Instead of thinking of all the special food and cakes waiting in Prešov, I was taking care of Jessi and when she was asleep I glided on my bike through the snowy and icy streets of Amsterdam shopping for food, trying desperately to create a bit of special atmosphere at home. It was then when I realized that until now I always relied on my mum to prepare everything for Christmas: the food, the decorations, the atmosphere. I knew there must have been lots of effort behind all those preparations but I never realized how much work it actually was. Up until the moment when I had to do all that myself, on my own. For the first time in my life. You try, you understand.

This all brought me a strange sense of calmness. In a packed local food store which suffered a cashier system crash leading to a long waiting time for check out, we exchanged recipes with equally affected shoppers instead of being fussy about the wait time. That was a nice experience although, honestly, I was a bit surprised that I wasn’t aggravated at least a little tiny bit. Complaining at least for myself, inside. None of that. Half an hour later, the fact that bake forms were hopelessly sold out in our local HEMA shop did not piss me off, as would usually be the case, but gave me a nice opportunity to explore the shopping street and to find another local supplier of the same type of goods. I found one in 10 minutes, never happier.

I suddenly started to realize that I’m much more relaxed and also much happier than just a day ago. I was actually on holiday in my mind, without even knowing about it. Instead of being stressed due to all that pre-holiday rush, I was already enjoying Christmas.

The Christmas day itself was great. Jessi’s fever eased and she feels much better now, I managed to cook a large pot of a special lentil soup for dinner and even managed to bake a fully home made apple cake, the first cake I ever baked in my life. Jessi says the cake was very good but she would say so even if it were horrible because she is nice to me. Of course as a true technologist I could not help to rely on my mother’s real-time advice via Skype, hence my laptop in the kitchen on that photograph.

In Slovakia, we have a proverb saying “Everything bad is good for something else”. I’m not sure whether there is an equivalent in English language culture. This year’s Christmas proved that for me in a spectacular way, I learned a thing or two about myself. Although I still miss my family and friends in Slovakia and Prague.

Autolux belongs to the category of those spontaneous musical discoveries for me. Although they have been around for a while, I did not know about them until recently (thanks @ibzero for the tip).

The Los Angeles trio is currently touring Europe and they performed live in Amsterdam, at Paradiso on December 4, supported by Tamaryn.

You must just love those concerts at Kleine zaal. A small, intimate venue allows for direct flow of energies and moods between the band and the crowd. Autolux filled the space with the otherworldly shoegaze noise underlined with some spectacular drumming (Carla Azar!), the audience responded with cheers, demanding more. During the quiet passages the crowds even shut up and listened quietly, something that you do not often experience in this city.

In our household there are multiple Macs using one single Time Capsule for Time Machine backups. Some of those Macs we do not even use anymore yet their Time Machine backups are still stored on that central Time Capsule. This is all fun and games until you find out that you need to restore data from the backup of a Mac you do not anymore have.

At first I thought that restoring the data from a backup of a Mac I do not anymore have will be a matter of selecting an appropriate backup volume in a sleek, design menu followed by a swim through the futuristic Time Machine and voilà, here is the file I was looking for. Nothing was less true. Although the OS X did all to soothe the pain of looking for a long lost file and the Time Machine visual experience was as stunning as always, I could only browse the backup of my current Mac.

There is no button titled promisingly as “Advanced” or “Other Time Machine Backups” to offer a help. My firm belief that OS X will do everything for me and I never again need to touch the terminal window (which was the ultimate goal of me switching to OS X from Linux at first place) was destroyed. Aargh.

At the end, the solution was simple and still well in realm of just “right clicks” (instead of
hdiutil
‘s). To access data from any Mac which was back up using Time Machine to your Time Capsule, do the following. In Finder, in left hand column, select your Time Capsule and then click on “Connect As…” and log in with the password used when setting up the Time Capsule.

Once you are logged in, you should see the name of your Time Capsule disk in the same Finder window. Double click on it and will see the list of one or more
.sparsebundle
files (or better, directories but that is not relevant now). Each of those
.sparsebundle
directories represents the backup for each Mac on the Time Capsule. To be able to access the backup, just double click on relevant
.sparsebundle
directory, this will mount the directory as a disk (your Mac Time Machine backup). To browse that disk with actual Time Machine, right click on the Time Machine icon in the Dock and select “Browse Other Time Machine Disks…” option.

</P.

You will be prompted with a window where you can select the backup disk you mounted above. You can then use the familiar, blinding Time Machine backup interface to look up and restore the files you need.

If you opened your Mac mini for instance to upgrade the memory or hard disk, it may happen that the ventilator will run at full speed after you power up the computer back, regardless of whether you are running any CPU-intensive task or not. This problem might remain present even if your computer is in the sleep mode. The fix to this problem is simple.

To revert the situation back to normal just switch off your Mac mini, unplug the power cable, press and hold the power button for five seconds, plug the power cable back in and then finally switch on your computer. The fan should now behave normally.

The above action resets so called System Management Controller (SMC) of your Mac. Apple recommends this action in some situations, the annoying fan problem being one of them. I’ve experienced this problem several times with my mid 2007 model: Macmini2,1 (Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz), the fix always worked.
